Sir Michael Caine’s special birthday homage from Cockney Pie’n’Mash shops

A special 92 nd birthday tribute to Sir Michal Caine, is being made by the nation’s Pie’n’Mash shops on Friday March 14 th to honour the legendary Cockney actor.

Paying homage from his Cockney heartland, Pie’n’Mash shops will be offering a free cup of tea to any customers who toast Sir Michael’s birthday with either a quick impersonation of the great man or share a fact not many people know about Cockneys or can name two of his 160 films.

The Cockney tribute to the South London-born actor is being made during National Pie’n’Mash Week (March 10-16th) part of the Modern Cockney Festival, celebrating the culinary, cultural heritage and pride of ‘non-posh Londoners’.

“Pie’n’mash is a delicious reminder of where Sir Michael came from, and the community that shaped him into the iconic figure he is today.” said Andy Green of the Modern Cockney Festival. “The food reflects Sir Michael’s identity and upbringing in the heart of London. Our traditional artisan-cooked meal, with its rich history and enduring popularity, continues to be a symbol of non-posh Londoners’ culture.”

Born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite in St. Olave’s Hospital in Rotherhithe in 1933 and growing up in Southwark to a charlady mother and a Billingsgate market porter father, provided the working-class family roots that have defined Sir Michael’s character and trademark accent.

An Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild award winner, Caine is one of only of a handful of male actors to be nominated for an Academy Award for acting in five different decades. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
