Discover how being young, gifted, and Black – and from London – created a world-leading powerhouse of creativity, culture, and legendary sounds and performers.
Join leading music journalist Lloyd Bradley, author of ‘Sounds like London: 100 years of Black music in the Capital,’ and ‘Bass Culture’ to explore and celebrate how Black music has been part of London’s landscape since the First World War and how an authentic Black music culture emerged in the Capital.
From Lovers Rock to Stormzy, via Smiley Culture, Jazzie B, Dizzee Rascal the event also explores how different generations of Black Londoners defined themselves in British culture, many not labelling themselves as ‘Cockneys’, yet sharing the experiences and marginalisation of London’s non-posh communities.
Join us for the story of five legendary artists and the sounds they inspired including:
Janet Kaye – the Lovers Rock story
Smiley Culture – the emerging culture mashup story
Jazzie B – the Soul II Soul story
Dizzee Rascal – the Grime story
Stormzy – the story of a child of Grime
The event is part of the Modern Cockney Festival (March 1st to 31st).
